Dr. Retana has been an advocate for Latino children his entire career. He has taught high school, been an assistant principal, associate superintendent, state department official, superintendent, and now is the founder and leader of the Ezequiel Tafoya Alvarado Academy. Dr. Retana published the book How to Raise Latino Student Achievement in Schools and is currently updating his next edition.

Dr. Retana has been a California Department of Education certified consultant to work with underperforming schools. He has worked in three different states and has worked closely with over 35 school districts. He says that his current job is the best he has had and looks forward to the students at ETAA improving each year.
